Call for Nominations

The 2024 submission guidelines and dates are outlined below for each award. Please see the awards overview and recipients page for more information about each award.

Alicia Cascallar Award

To be eligible for the award, one must have presented a paper or been the first author of a paper presented at one of the three most recent NCME meetings (2021, 2022 or 2023)[1] in a paper session or as part of a symposium or panel discussion. The nominee must be an early career scholar, having received his/her doctoral degree within 5 years of the 2024 annual meeting. In addition, the candidate must be a member of NCME or he/she must become a member by the time the award is presented at the 2024 NCME Annual Meeting.

Nominations must include the following items:

  1. A letter of nomination from a professional colleague who is a member in good standing of NCME or self-nomination by a NCME member
  2. The candidate’s current curriculum vitae
  3. At least one letter of recommendation from someone who knows the candidate’s work; multiple recommendations are acceptable
  4. Both the nomination and the letter(s) of recommendation should list the reasons why the paper represents an important contribution to the field of applied measurement
  5. An electronic copy of the paper presented at NCME. Please do not submit subsequent versions (i.e., publication).
  6. For multi-authored papers, the candidate must be the first author or, if not the first author, be the presenter of the paper. The candidate must provide a statement that defines his/her unique contributions to the paper. All other co-authors must provide a statement indicating that these contributions were unique and added to the value of the paper.

Annual Award

Nominating procedure: All individuals and groups in the field of educational measurement are eligible for this award. The candidate must be a member of NCME or he/she must become a member by the time the award is presented at the 2024 NCME Annual Meeting. NCME members are encouraged to submit nominations. Self-nominations are also encouraged.

Submission details: A nomination consists of a 3- to 5-page statement summarizing the contribution. The materials should clearly describe and demonstrate the importance of the contribution to the field of educational measurement. Additional supporting documentation (up to five documents) is also welcome. Materials should include the names and addresses of at least two persons familiar with the specific application and its impact/results, the names and all contact information on all nominees. The committee may request further materials and may contact others who are likely able to evaluate the contribution.

Deadline: The submission deadline for the 2024 NCME Annual Award is January 5, 2024. All materials must be submitted by this date.

Awards: Awards are determined by the Annual Awards Committee. The recipient of the Annual Award receives a plaque and a $1,000 cash payment.

Bradley Hanson Award

To be eligible for the award a candidate must (1) be a member of NCME, and (2) have completed, be working on, or be proposing a project that makes a significant contribution to the field of educational measurement or a significant contribution to the development of new professionals in the field. Individuals or groups of individuals at any stage in their careers are eligible.

Nomination (application) packages for the award must include: (a) the letter of nomination, (b) a completed application form, (c) at least one letter of recommendation from person(s) other than the nominator, which addresses the qualifications of the candidate and the importance of the project, (d) a project description of 1500 words or less, which must provide details on the specific research project to be supported by the award and information on how the $1,250 will be spent, and (e) a current curriculum vitae.

The nominator and the nominee agree that this work will not be nominated for a similar award in AERA that will be given during the 2024 Annual Meeting. The letter of nomination and the letter(s) of recommendation must be written on official letterhead. The complete application package, including the letter of nomination, the letter(s) of recommendation, the application form, project description, and curriculum vitae, must be submitted electronically via email by 11:59 pm (Eastern Standard Time) on January 5, 2024. Brenda Loyd Outstanding Dissertation Award

Eligibility
Nominations will be accepted for dissertations completed between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2023. The author of the dissertation as well as the author’s advisor must both be members of NCME.

Nomination
Nominations must include the following:

  1. A letter of nomination from the author’s advisor;
  2. A summary of the dissertation research (up to 10 double-spaced pages) that includes sections that describe the rationale for the study, brief literature review, research questions, methodology, results, and conclusions;
  3. A copy of the dissertation; and
  4. A statement from the graduate school or a copy of the diploma confirming the date of completion and acceptance of the dissertation.

The nominator and the nominee agree that this work will not be nominated for a similar award in AERA that will be given during the 2024 Annual Meeting. Submit electronic files of all materials by January 5, 2024 to Kaiwen Man (kman@ua.edu) with CC to the NCME Awards Board Liaison, Li Cai (cai@cresst.org), and the NCME management office (ncme@ncme.org).

Career Contribution Award

A nomination must include an electronic copy of: (1) a one- or two-page summary of the nature, significance, and impact of the nominee’s contribution to the field of educational measurement from the nominator; and (2) an up-to-date vita of the nominee. Additional supporting documentation is also welcome. Nominations from one year are carried over for consideration for the next award. Updated materials are encouraged for nominees who will be reconsidered. Nominations should be made by an NCME member.  The nominator and the nominee agree that the nominee will not simultaneously be a candidate for a similar AERA career award or a candidate for additional NCME awards to be given during the 2024 Annual Meetings.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Member of NCME at the time of the Award.
  2. Overall impact of the individual’s contributions to the field through theoretical contributions to measurement methodology, applied research that has influenced the work of many other researchers, insightful analyses that have influenced the thought of measurement professional and policy makers, and/or the development of instruments that have set standards of excellence in testing.
  3. Scholarship in the field of measurement through publications that have materially advanced the use of measurement in education and education-related contexts; publications that have had a pronounced effect on measurement practices and research; publications that have significantly advanced the measurement training of teachers, administrators, test developers, and others who use educational measurement in their daily work; and/or publications that have helped to resolve long-standing problems, addressed important social issues, attacked problems that few others have been willing or able to consider, or provided new and critical insights.
  4. Service to the profession through contributions to professional organizations, including service on committees, editorial committees, editorial activities, and office holding (with particular emphasis on NCME service) and/or through consultation, speaking, advocacy, recruitment, and willingness to accept responsibilities of leadership.

Jason Millman Promising Measurement Scholar Award

To be eligible for the Jason Millman Award, an applicant must have received his/her first doctoral degree on or after January 1, 2018.

Nominations must include the following items:

  1. A letter of nomination from a professional colleague who is a member in good standing of NCME or self-nomination by a NCME member
  2. A letter of recommendation from someone who knows the candidate’s work
  3. The candidate’s current curriculum vitae
  4. Electronic copy of up to three papers
  5. A copy of the diploma confirming the date of completion of first doctoral degree
